KILROY
I shuffled out from under him and brushed off the snow clinging to my clothes.
A bright blue tent sat in the middle of a circle of trees. It glowed from the inside thanks to a lantern that was still on. The remnants of a fire was close by.
I tensed with fear. My stomach had no such reservations. It rumbled with a ravenous hunger.
Magnus pulled me behind a tree. He peeked at the campsite.
âIs it weird that Iâm scared and hungry?â I asked.
âItâs because you smell blood.â
I was like a kid on Thanksgiving possessed by the smells of fresh-cooked food coming from the kitchen but forced to wait hours until we could eat.
âWe should go,â Magnus said. He kept a protective hand on my hip, keeping me behind the tree.
âWait.â I was impulsive, though, and I shoved forward to catch a glimpse. âThereâs no movement coming from the tent.â
âThey could be out on a hunt.â
âThen why would they leave their lantern on? Wouldnât they want to conserve energy since theyâre in the middle of nowhere?â
While Magnus chewed on that new piece to the puzzle, I tested my hypothesis by throwing a small rock at the tent. It bounced off the side and flopped into the snow.
âKilroy, stop!â Magnus whisper-yelled at me.
I wasnât as scared as him because I knew we could turn into bats in a matter of seconds.
âLook.â I pointed at the tent. âNobody reacted.â
The lantern created a silhouette effect turning the objects inside into shadow puppets. The shadow puppets didnât budge.
âIsnât it typical to have a person stay behind as lookout or something? Thatâs what my ChoBros and I did when we camped on the beach to make sure animals didnât come.â
Magnus tapped his fingers on the tree in deliberation. I already had my answer, though.
I walked to the tent.
âKilroy!â Magnus whisper-yelled behind me.
âHello! Humans!â I called into the tent. âDid anybody order a large pizza with pepperoni and banana peppers?â
No answer. No stirring. I walked around the perimeter to get a better look at the silhouettes.
âAnybody home?â
The tent had an eerie silence as if it were a haunted house, and I was the dumb comic relief who had to check it out.
I shrugged to Magnus, who remained behind the tree. I unzipped the tent and had my suspicions confirmed.
The dead bodies of two explorers lay in sleeping bags side-by-side, with a lantern glowing between them. I checked each of their pulses to confirm they had passed on.
I poked my head from the tent and gave Magnus a thumbs-up to join. I ran my thumb across my throat so he knew what was up.
âHow long have they been dead?â I asked Magnus once he arrived in the tent.
âIâd say less than a day. Maybe just a few hours. Their bodies arenât frozen yet.â I leaned down to get a better look at them. They were about my age and in good shape. Any human who dared travel up here had to be in tiptop form to survive as long as they did.
